We played our old nemesis Surrey in the first match. Newly back in the squad , Tony Jackson lost a very tight match to Geoff Howes at fifth string going down 10-8 in the fifth. Meanwhile, at fourth string ex-Scottish international Gordon Blair was much to strong for Russ Shipton. Chris Goodburn played very well to come back from two down to beat Alan Davison and Mark Cowley hammered Andy Wilde of the court to win 3 love. I beat my Lakeside clubmate, Al Niven, 3-1 having been 1-1 and 3-8 down in the third. I think I am his bogeyman. The points result was 16-9 in our favour.

Meanwhile Herts beat Kent 18-9. The pm match was against Kent. At fifth string Tony Jackson struggled not used to two matches a day and lost 3-1 to Keith Hibbard. At fourth string, Russ Shipton played extremely well to beat Arthur Harvey 9-7 in the fifth. Once again mark Cowley was far to strong for his opponent Phil Crane and was ruthless in a 3-0 win, his opponent only getting seven points. Chris Goodburn at third string lost 3-1 to an awkward opponent in Ian Smith. I then beat peter Wilmore 3-1 to give us a points victory of 16-9 again. Surrey beat Herts 18-7.

Going into the last match on Sunday, it was all very tight. Tony Jackson and Russ Shipton at fifth and fourth strings were both comprehensively beaten 3-0 by Peter Quarman and ex O55 England international David Cooper respectively. Mark Cowley played his friend Phil Collins and after a close first game, won comfortably 3-0. Chris Goodburn at third string, played Bill Nissel who was playing at first string last year but was recovering from injury??? He didnt look to bad to me! Chris was well beaten 3-0. I played Peter Leary at second string and at the end of the fourth game and after some very strange scores 0-9 9-0, 6-9, 9-0, I damaged my leg and lost easily in the fifth. We went down 17 -5 in points. Surrey beat Kent 16-6.

Unfortunately, we ended up third and are now involved in the relegation battle. However, Stuart has had an operation and hopes to be fit by then.
